A Rainy Day in Singapore

We were up bright and early but unfortunately the rain had the same idea. We reverted to Plan B and lingered over a hearty breakfast before heading out to explore in a fairly gentle monsoon.

Took the metro down to the Singapore River area which used to be all bum boats and warehouses but is now skyscrapers and trendy restaurants. We took a trip on a tour boat which gave us a different view of the sights and certainly makes you realise what a prosperous and dynamic place Singapore is.

Next headed for Chinatown and some shopping. I bet that you cannot wait to see Dave in his Tiger Beer t-shirt. The sheer effort of spending money made a reviving one essential.

After a bit more shopping we went for lunch in a hawker centre. This is a bit like a food court but with a myriad of tiny stalls offering an amazing range of different things to eat and drink. At first it seemed like a bit of a madhouse but once we worked it out it was great fun and the food was excellent.

Back to base for a shower and cocktails then we hit the town. The weather had cleared up so we headed for Raffles and the Jimmy Smith Memorial Drink. Rosena is seen here enjoying her £11 pint. We had no children to sell so a Singapore Sling was well out of our reach. This is no town for a drinking man.

Our next port of call was Orchard Road which is like a cross between Knightsbridge and Las Vegas. The system of underground shopping malls and walkways meant that we managed to get lost just crossing the street. You would not believe how many people want to shop till they drop at 8 p.m. on a Sunday evening. I suppose it's cheaper than going to the pub. We moved on to another, out of town, hawker centre for our supper. Mixed satays with fried rice and a nice bottle of Tiger then back to base for a nightcap.
